The Frank Bette Center for the Arts

The Frank Bette Center for the Arts is ". . . a place for meetings, readings, showings, and other creative doings."
                                                                                                                                                                                           - Frank Bette

The non-profit, volunteer run Frank Bette Center for the Arts is housed in the lovely yellow turn-of-the-century Victorian at 1601 Paru Street at Lincoln Avenue in Alameda, California.
Benefactor Frank Bette was a master antique furniture restorer. Upon his death in 1999 at the age of 99, he bequeathed the house as “a place for meetings, readings, showings, and other creative doings.” (Read his history.)

Today, our mission is to build upon Frank’s dream. Artists, art lovers, and collectors are encouraged to view this year’s show schedule and to get involved in: Art Exhibits: There is always something fresh and new in the Center’s Main and Signature Galleries, including rotating group and solo shows that present fine arts and crafts, jewelry and textile arts, sculpture, paintings, photography and various modes of literary, music, and mixed media arts.  Exhibitions  |  Current shows  |  Past shows

Classes: Instruction is offered in a variety of media and experience levels from beginners to advanced students digging deep to develop their craft. Students work at their own pace, and like-minded groups gather to share and enhance their talents. Learn more.

Programs: Regularly-scheduled events in music, poetry, storytelling, and speakers in art, art history and the art of collecting move the creative spirit, share talents, and give and receive support and constructive input. Learn more.

Annual Events

  • Leading up to summer, artists from far and wide gather in Alameda for the “Plein Air Paintout”, create their magic throughout the community, and share insight into the creative process. Their works are exhibited at the Bette for two months and are for sale. Lean more.
  • During winter, the Holiday Boutique delights the discerning shopper

Satellite Galleries
allow artist members show and sell their work in a number of Satellite Galleries in Alameda. Learn more.

Artists, supporters of the Center, community residents, art collectors, volunteers, and donors make up the team of dedicated members and volunteers without whom little would be possible. These efforts enable more classes, workshops, literary events, and exhibits and encourage a growing family of collaborative partnerships. Become a member.

Volunteer at the Bette and contribute in the way that best expresses your passions. Become a member and experience the pleasure of being part of Frank’s gift to the community. Sponsor a show or project and allow expanded outreach, or simply donate, either directly or via Déjà Vu, our annual silent auction fundraiser. Learn more.

Frank Bette gave the community a beautiful building, and his generous spirit inspires the character of the Center and the arts. Today, his strengths—serving the community and reaching out to partner creatively with visionary people and organizations—allow the Frank Bette Center for the Arts to strive toward becoming a leading catalyst for creative energy and cultural pride.
