Class Description
Do you find drawing and painting people to be daunting? This workshop will help distill complex features into simplified shapes and values to achieve the essence of the figurative form. Learn about the qualities and benefits of gouache paint along in a ‘gouache basics’ guided demo, look at successful and varied styles of gouache figure painting, then work on a variety of figure and portrait painting studies with direct support from the instructor (or put Jenna Hobbs here). Finally, after painting a variety of figure and portrait studies, choose a study from the first day to become a full fledged painting for the second day of the workshop. Supply List: Paint: 12 pack Holbein gouache paint set (need to purchase burnt umber separately) Individual paint tubes, 15 ml I use Holbein, Windsor & Newton is also great!) Pure white (would recommend 60ml tube if possible) Lemon yellow Carmine or Pure red Magenta Ultramarine Deep (blue) Burnt Siena Burnt umber ← can also mix red & green to make brown Palettes: For gouache tubes, you really do need a ‘palette box’ (to keep paints wet) Honbay paint palette box or Transon paint storage box For your mixing palette, I have custom made ceramic palettes that will be provided and available for purchase for $30 Brushes: brands: Transon, Royal & Langnickel, Princeton, Silver Brush 1/4” flat brush 1/2” flat brush 1” flat brush #4 round brush for details Paper: toned mixed media sketchbook gray or beige 8.5”x5.5” toned mixed media sketchbook 9’’x12’’ or 11’’x14’’ If you prefer white paper, 140 lb cold press (in sketchbook form or loose). I recommend arches Also needed: A small spray bottle to keep paints hydrated Rags or paper towels for wiping brushes A cup for water

Cancellation Policy
Cancellation & Refund Policy Frank Bette Class or Workshop Cancellation and Refund Policy The instructor has the option of cancelling a class or workshop that does not meet the required minimum of enrolled students three (3) days prior to the start date. All fees for cancellations may be refunded. Registered students must notify the Frank Bette Center at least five (5) full days prior to the start of a class or workshop to effectively cancel registration and be eligible for a full refund. To cancel, email classes@frankbettecenter.org and the class or workshop instructor or call the Center: 510-523-6957. Students cancelling no less than three (3) full days prior to the workshop may receive a credit for a future workshop upon approval of the instructor. Credits are valid for up to six (6) months from the date of issue. Fees for cancellations made after the class or workshop start date and no-shows are charged the full amount. No credits are issued. Frank Bette Center for the Arts reserves the right to cancel any class or workshop. Registrants are notified by phone or email and may receive a full refund or a credit towards future workshop by the same instructor.
