Partnership with Dick Davis and the Zacatlán Mosaic Mural Project

The Frank Bette Center for the Arts became involved with the Zacatlán Mosaic Mural Project through a longstanding partnership with Dick Davis and the Dick Davis Family Trust.

Margaret Fago first met Dick Davis in 2013 when he approached FBCA looking for a nonprofit partner to help support an exhibition featuring the work of Mexican artist Miguel Díaz Guerrero. That initial collaboration led to a series of projects sponsored by Dick Davis that encourage cultural exchange, public art, and artistic exploration in both Mexico and California.

One of the partnership's most ambitious projects is an ongoing mosaic mural initiative in Zacatlán, Mexico, a designated "Pueblo Mágico." What began as a single mural has grown into a series of installations throughout the town, transforming walls, buildings, and public spaces.

Under the leadership of Maria del Carmen Olvera ("Mary Carmen"), and with the support of her family, local artists, artisans, and volunteers, the Zacatlán Mosaic Mural Project continues to grow each year. The murals celebrate regional history, culture, and storytelling while bringing new life to the community.

The partnership has also supported a variety of initiatives in California, including the placement of a statue of Amelia Earhart at Amelia Earhart Elementary School on Bay Farm Island and plein air painting excursions to the historic Gold Rush town of Alleghany in California's Sierra Foothills.
