April 2 - May 1 “Alameda On Camera" 48 Artists, 48 Hrs,
48 Map Pieces”
We decided to begin our photographic inquiry using a film camera. We used one roll of film which we each exposed from our side of the border while looking into the opposite side. The film was thus double exposed. That film became the basic building block for the individual explorations of our small segment of Alameda. We each utilized digital imaging combined with film imaging to create our piece. As we moved along the boundary lines of our territories new ideas about boundaries began to emerge. We were drawn to not only the neighborhoods as we saw them today but also to the remnants of the past that were hinted at in the architecture and the tall trees. We decided that the work should explore the idea of blurring the lines of distinction between the past and present as well the distinction between old and new photographic practices. In this work our contemporary photographic images reside alongside vintage vernacular photographs that reveal the rich history of Alameda. Alameda’s history has been shaped by a strong military presence. Yet it has also been a place of refuge, recreation and family life. We attempt to blur the boundaries of these two seemingly disparate aspects of Alameda’s history in the work we have created. Our work looks at the specifically defined yet arbitrary idea of the boundary in all of its facets and attempts to blur the edges of this sometimes sharply defined concept.
