Gerry Long

BIO - GERMAINE (GERRY) LONG For nearly 50 years I have been shooting at whatever is around me - with a camera, fortunately. I lived in San Francisco most of these years and enjoyed an amazing variety of subjects. To sharpen my vision, I've taken classes at the de Young Museum, U.C. Berkeley Extension (SF), and the wonderful old "Photo Center" on Duboce St., which no doubt has a new name now. I've thrown in more than a few weekend photo workshops, as well.

I love trying to see things in an unusual way, as well as experimenting with special effects in Photoshop. My Photo Center darkroom days have never really left me, and I still like the unique opportunities that black and white images provide. I like the challene of making etching-like images in Photoshop without the fuss of etching and inking plates. Making photo collages is such an adventure, as my two entries in the 2009 AOC competition will attest. And reflections never cease to fascinate me.

I've traveled to western and central Europe, Japan, Ecuador and Gabon to add some variety to my photo collection. And I've raised two sons to be excellent photographers, probably my greatest achievement. They will be helping me set up a collection of my photos online.

I really appreciate the opportunity to show my work at the Frank Bette Center. Debra and her army of dedicated volunteers (Debra's Army?) do an outstanding job of fostering community participation in the arts. Thank you all!
