 The weekend of February 23 and 24 was foul. It was bone-chillingly cold. Threatening clouds rolled over the pewter hills and let loose sheets of rain. It was nonetheless held in the parentheses of a stunning sunrise and a paradisiacally inspirational sunset often associated with the island city.
 
   All this was noted by 48 intrepid photographers while much of the community was home nursing a cold or flu. As part of the annual "Alameda On Camera" event, each artist had been assigned 1/48th of the map of Alameda and had a mere 48 hours in which to explore and record the aesthetic essence of their unique site. Some local artists knew exactly what was worth seeking and finding in their parcel while others reported surprising visuals, undiscovered until the photo shoot required them to look at their hometown with more focus and intensity. Out-of-town artists were delighted with Alameda's historic Victorian houses beside modern industry, picturesque streets and bridges, lush foliage and palm trees, accoutrements of ethnic diversity, naval presence and all that water.
 
The 48 artists were selected by juror Clint Imboden for the annual "Alameda on Camera" event sponsored by the Frank Bette Center for the Arts located at 1601 Paru St. at Lincoln. He gave them full rein and encouraged artistic innovation. The photo-based artists have one month in their studios to develop their vision of Alameda. Toward that end, the photos will be altered, embellished, transferred, isolated, multiplied and otherwise variously translated into pieces as unique as the 48 personalities and sites.
 
Come see whether the provocative knocker on your garden gate has been immortalized or whether the cloud formations were seen reflected in the hood of your car. There's the neon in the window of your Laundromat, the graffiti scrawled on your fence by the neighbor's kid, and the image of your stubborn yellow rose hanging on the pendant of a necklace. Come see the familiar through other eyes.
 
The public is cordially and enthusiastically invited to attend the First Friday Gala unveiling of these works on the evening of Friday April 4th from 7-9. Light refreshments provided.
 
The "Alameda on Camera" exhibit runs 4/4-4/28.

“48 Hour Photography Challenge Event”: February 22 – 24  Launch Party: 7-9 PM Friday, February 22

Orientation & “Focusing Presentation” by Clint Imboden, Juror. Drawing Map Pieces (Geographic boundaries for each artist)

Photography: 9 PM Friday, Feb 22 through 9 PM Sunday, Feb 24 Forty eight selected photo-based artists will draw a piece of the map of Alameda by lottery and have 48 hours to capture their impressions of “their piece of Alameda.” The artists will explore our neighborhoods, favorite places, and secret hideaways. Our families, friends, and town characters, both the famous and anonymous, will be in the spotlight. Alameda traditions and cherished nostalgia will share the lens with candid shots of our skeletons and dirty laundry. 

“Alameda On Camera” Exhibit: April 4 – 26

First Friday Gala Opening – Friday, April 4, 7–9 PM The final results of the 48 hour challenge will be revealed at the First Friday Opening Gala April 4.  The exhibit will run the 26th of April.

Juror: Clint Imboden

Clint Imboden has been making art for over 20 years.  Although in recent years Clint has broadened his interest beyond pure photography to include sculpture and installation, his work continues to have a strong photographic element. Solo exhibitions include the Galleria Centro Americano in Medellin, Columbia, the Aberdeen Art Museum in Aberdeen, Scotland and the Society of Contemporary Photography in Kansas City, Missouri. His work has been included in group exhibitions: "Images Against War" at the Peace Museum, Chicago, Illinois, "Fotografos Norte Americanos" Centro de la fotografia; Lima, Peru, and "Beyond Boundaries: Contemporary Photography in California" at The Friends of Photography, San Francisco, California. His work is included in public collections at the di Rosa Preserve, Napa, California, Musee de la Photographie a Charleroi; Chareroi, Belgium and the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
